Hidden in the raw dataset were the responses to the question “What critical issues face design?,” where respondents could write-in their own answers. The 2700+ written responses were insightful and expressive, personal in a way that the discrete data was not. We wanted to use this corpus to tell a story, and to humanize the data set—to see responses as people and not data points. My roles on the project included analyzing the dataset (parsing text with python, categorizing and analyzing responses), and prototyping web interactions.&nbsp; This project exists in two forms: an exploratory website, and an interactive book. We wanted users to ‘physically’ engage with the content, by being able to receive visual feedback from the words themselves. A digital interface allows for quick transitions between content using hyperlinks. Moving through layers of meta information and cyclical clicking inspired our visual design and interactions. I prototyped different iterations of content layout and web interactions, and organized the information architecture of the site, so that the team would remain on the same page as Rachel moved forward with web development. Jaclyn and I finalized the look and visual system. Looking at the generated lists, we picked out words/phrases that described themes or ideas, which we grouped into six broader categories: power, representation, education, quality, change, and community. I used these groups as dictionaries to parse through the quotes again, sorting indivdual responses into categories. This site doesn’t use every single response—it’s a prototype of a bigger collection. We selected ~20 quotes per category to analyze further, and picked phrases within the quote that described the main theme. If quotes intersected with other categories, we made sure to highlight those phrases as well. (And we had a few super sexy color-coded spreadsheets.) While the National Audubon Society has a very elegant and beautifal tool for bird-watchers, Macroinvertebrates.org is unique in its collection of gigapan, zoomable insect imagery. Part 01. It’s been a while since high school biology. The field guide allows users to browse 93 Families within&nbsp;9 Orders, and zoom and drag high quality images of insects. &nbsp; There are three main sections: the Order Page, the Family Page, and the zoomable image, which has genus-level information. Macroinvertebrates.org is unique in its field because of its high resolution gigapan images. One of the project’s learning goals is to help people be comfortable identifiying insects in order to reliably provide citizen science data for environmental agencies. Learning how to accurately identify (ID) relies heavily on visual memory and observation. For example, when people first learn about Mayflies, they typically learn from a scientific illustration of the insect. They can learn how to distinguish Mayflies from Stoneflies, but they don’t recognize that there are a variety of Mayflies outside of its prototypical image. And so, with the design, we wanted to create a system that highlights all of the amazing images. With little other visual elements, typography had to play an important role in establishing content hierarchy. We spent a lot of time going back and forth with Scientific vs. Common names, and the typographic conventions that would have to be established. An exploration of light and color as a means for communication Inspired by deep-sea creatures that use light to communicate, zoöid is a line of eight pieces that combines physical computing, 3-D printing, and LED lights to create light-art wearables that act in synchronization for an audio-reactive, intricate light-show on stage. zoöid bridges a gap in current physical computing and technology integration in fashion.Over the course of six months, we designed and produced the light-art wearables that walked the runway at Lunar Gala (Yesterday) at the end of February.&nbsp; As an interdisciplinary team with various technical backgrounds, we split our roles to address different parts of the project. much more than we had pre-COVID. For remote schooling in particular, classroom discussions have fallen flat, as students refuse to turn on their cameras or microphones. How can we incentivize participation and discussion in a remote learning environment? Using Google’s Teachable Machine, p5.js, and Open Broadcast Software (OBS), we designed and developed moving flower avatars that grow and interact based on your speech and gestures. The more you speak, the more excited your flower friend becomes, and the taller they grow! Dan Schiffman’s tutorial is super comprehensive, if you want to set it up! Once you have OBS, you’ll also have to train your own Teachable Machine image model for the following gestures: thumbs up, thumbs down, hand raise, timeout, and neutral. You can then insert your image model URL into the live code to (hopefully) see a flower avatar on your head!/// In the process of this project, we had to figure out the limitations of Teachable Machine. The sound model that can categorize speaking vs. non speaking audio worked fairly consistently for all&nbsp; five of us.
